Nail preparation, size selection, pressing technique, clean removal. The complete tutorial for perfect application and maximum hold, whether you use gel pads or glue.
March 10, 2026 · Updated April 24, 2026 · Complete tutorialApplying press-on nails requires no special skills. 10 minutes are enough to achieve a flawless manicure at home. But the difference between a wear that lasts 2 days and a wear that lasts 7 to 14 days lies entirely in the preparation steps.
This guide covers the entire application process, from nail preparation to removal, with techniques that make the difference between "it doesn't last" and "it looks like a salon finish".

What You Need
Each Popnails kit contains everything you need: 24 nails in 12 sizes, adhesive gel pads, cosmetic glue, a cuticle stick for cuticles and removal. Add a cotton pad and rubbing alcohol (or non-acetone nail polish remover) for degreasing, and you're ready.
The 6-Step Application Process
Wash your hands with lukewarm water and soap. Dry them thoroughly, including your nails and the surrounding skin. Moisture is the number one enemy of adhesion: even a slightly damp nail prevents the gel pad or glue from sticking properly.
Push back cuticles. With the wooden cuticle stick included in the kit, gently push back the cuticles on each finger towards the base. Do not cut them, just push them back. This step increases the adhesive surface and allows the press-on nail to sit perfectly flush with the cuticle, for a natural look without visible gaps.
Degrease each nail. This is the most important step in the entire process. Wipe each nail with a cotton pad soaked in 70° rubbing alcohol (or non-acetone nail polish remover), from the base to the free edge. This removes the natural sebum film, invisible to the naked eye, which forms a barrier between the adhesive and the nail surface.
No cream, no oil. If you have recently applied hand cream or cuticle oil, degreasing must be even more thorough. The oily residue infiltrates the micro-grooves of the nail and drastically reduces adhesion.
Each Popnails kit contains 24 nails in 12 sizes. Before applying any adhesive, do a dry run on each finger: place the nail without glue or gel pad to check that it perfectly covers the nail, edge to edge.
The ideal nail covers the natural nail from one side edge to the other, without overflowing onto the skin and without leaving an empty space. It aligns with the cuticle at the top and does not touch the skin on the sides.
Too wide? The nail extends onto the skin, catching on everything you touch and lifting off in a few hours. Lightly file the sides with a fine-grit nail file to adjust it.
Too narrow? The natural nail is visible under the sides of the press-on. The natural lateral pressure of the finger pushes the nail upwards and causes rapid lifting. Go up a size.
Two possible methods. Both work, and both are included in the kit. The choice depends on the desired wear time.
With gel pads (3 to 7 days wear): peel a gel pad from its sheet, place it on the surface of the natural nail, centering it well, then remove the upper protective film. The gel pad should cover as much surface as possible without overflowing onto the skin.
With glue (7 to 14 days wear): apply a thin layer of glue on the natural nail AND a thin layer inside the press-on nail. One drop per surface is enough. Too much glue creates bubbles and reduces adhesion instead of increasing it.
The right technique. Hold the press-on nail slightly tilted at 45°. First, place the edge closest to the cuticle, aligning it as close as possible to the base of the nail without touching the skin. Then progressively lower the press-on nail towards the free edge, pressing it against the natural nail.
Press firmly for 30 seconds. Not 5 seconds, not 10. A full thirty seconds, with firm and constant thumb pressure. Pay particular attention to the side edges and the base, which are the most common areas for lifting.
Push out air bubbles. While pressing, smooth from the center towards the edges to expel any air trapped between the adhesive and the nail. Air bubbles create areas without contact, which reduce adhesion.
After applying all 10 press-on nails, avoid all contact with water for 1 to 2 hours. Water weakens the adhesion of gel pads and prevents the glue from fully hardening. A shower or washing dishes right after application can halve the wear time.
If an edge seems slightly lifted, repress the nail for an additional 10 seconds. If the nail truly won't stick, remove it, clean the nail, apply a new gel pad, and start again. Forcing poor adhesion will never yield a good result.
The 5 Mistakes That Ruin Wear
In 90% of cases, when press-on nails come off too quickly, it's because of one of these mistakes:
Not degreasing the nail. This is the #1 cause of lifting. Natural sebum creates an invisible film that prevents any adhesive from sticking. Degreasing with alcohol is mandatory, not optional.
Choosing a nail that is too large. A nail that overflows onto the skin catches on every movement and lifts off in a few hours. Always file rather than force it.
Pressing for 5 seconds instead of 30. The adhesive (gel pad or glue) needs 30 seconds of constant pressure to achieve maximum adhesion. This is mechanical, not a choice.
Wetting hands immediately after application. Water within the first 1 to 2 hours weakens the bond between the adhesive and the nail. Apply your press-on nails after washing dishes, not before.
Applying cream or oil before application. Oily substances infiltrate the micro-grooves of the nail and create an invisible anti-adhesive layer. No hand cream on application day, or degrease even more carefully.
How to Remove Your Press-On Nails Cleanly
Removal is just as important as application. Correct removal preserves the natural nail and allows the press-on nails to be reused.
With gel pads: slide the cuticle stick under the free edge of the nail and gently lift from the edge towards the base. If the nail resists, soak your fingers in warm water for 2-3 minutes and try again. Gel pads dissolve on contact with water. The nail removes without any residue and without any effort.
With glue: fill a bowl with warm water, a few drops of olive oil, and mild soap. Soak your fingers for 10-15 minutes. The glue will gradually soften. Then lift each nail with the cuticle stick, without ever forcing it. Any glue residue can be removed with a mini-file, using very gentle movements.
After removal: caring for your nails
Between applications, your natural nails deserve a moment of recovery. Apply a nourishing oil (castor oil, sweet almond oil, or jojoba oil) to each nail and massage the cuticle. Let your nails breathe for at least 24 hours between long applications.
If your nails are already weakened (ridged, brittle, peeling), press-on nails are an excellent alternative to aggressive techniques while your nails strengthen. To understand the causes and solutions, consult our complete guide: ridged, brittle, or yellow nails: causes and solutions.
